Sebastian "Bass" Humphrey Whiting-O'Keefe passed away at the age of 18 after a tragic car accident on June 13, 2026.

Bass was born on December 15, 2007, to Robin Whiting and Shauna O'Keefe, and the world truly became a better place with him in it. Although he was an only child, Bass was surrounded by a large and loving family filled with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. From the very beginning, he was fortunate to have been given a best friend in his cousin Noah, with whom he shared a beautiful lifelong bond.

When Shauna met Eric Opelt, Bass's family grew exponentially larger, and it grew again when Robin met Julia Steffen. With each addition came more people who loved him deeply and whom he loved back.

Bass moved to Neillsville during his kindergarten year and soon met the people who would become lifelong friends, Claiton, Collin, Gabe, Guillermo, John, Hunter, and many more are all better for having known and loved one another. Bass was undoubtedly surrounded by love.

He was known for his deeply kind heart, his humor, and, of course, his beautiful hair. Bass wasn't just smart, funny, caring, and empathetic-he had a rare drive to challenge himself and to grow through the things he was passionate about and held close to his heart.

Bass had a profound love of music. He enjoyed singing in the choir, learning to play instruments, and sharing endless artist and song recommendations pulled from his expansive and eclectic Spotify playlist. From a young age, he also fell in love with the adventure and challenge of video games. Like many young gamers, he dreamt of becoming a professional streamer. And while that dream was still ahead of him, he achieved something remarkable, rising to rank as a Top 500 player in Overwatch, placing him in the top 0.1% of one of the world's most competitive online eSports games.

His curiosity didn't stop there. Bass loved puzzles and critical-thinking challenges. He refused to believe that any problem had only one solution, much to the amazement of escape room hosts who watched him solve the final puzzles before the first ones were even unlocked. He was a talented chess player, an enthusiastic Pokémon hunter, and he enjoyed playing hockey, running track, and skiing.

Bass recently celebrated his high school graduation from Neillsville. His senior quote, from one of his favorite anime shows, Sonny Boy- "Our lives are just beginning. What lies ahead will just take a bit longer"-captured his optimism and excitement for the future. He was registered to attend UW-Eau Claire in the fall to pursue a degree in astrophysics, ready to explore the universe and our place in it. He looked forward to college life, learning Mandarin, going to concerts, and traveling the world.

Bass is remembered, loved, and profoundly missed by his family, pets, friends, and communities both in Neillsville and online.

In Bass's honor, tell the people you care about that you love them often - and stay based.

In lieu of flowers, the family plans to establish a scholarship in Bass's honor to support future explorers of the universe. His graduation gifts, given with such hope for his future, will be used to help create this fund. Details will be shared as plans are finalized.
