John Mathew Back

John Mathew Back, age, 66 of Neillsville, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully in his sleep with his faithful dog Spook beside him on Thursday, June 18, 2026, in Loveland, Colorado.

He was born on September 30, 1959 in Whitehall, Wisconsin, the youngest of five children born to the late Chester and Myra (Stahoski) Back. John held many roles through his working career – his favorite being a cab driver for Limo Cab in Eau Claire. He moved to Neillsville in 1991. He was united in marriage to Cheryl “Cheri” Piel on September 4, 1999.

John had a big heart and was always one to help someone in need – Wasn’t afraid of talking to strangers and would start a conversation with anyone about anything. He held many interests and was always curious to try new things. He loved westerns and thrillers, all animals, motorcycles - especially Harley Davidson’s, fishing, camping, traveling, gardening, he always made sure to grow enough vegetables to give away to friends and family – he was a great cook and grill master and cooking breakfast for people was his pride and joy. You could often find him wheeling and dealing to find good deals on cars, ATV’s, boats, trailers and really anything one could own or trade. He often had a mischievous twinkle in his eyes and he liked to joke around and be silly.

John had many friends – too many to count. His best friend and trusting companion was his dog Spook – they were inseparable all the way to the end. His favorite song was “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd – he was a man of many words and held strong opinions, always with the best intentions. John had a lot of respect for Native American ways and cultures. He was one of a kind and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

John is survived by his wife, Cheri, of Neillsville; children, Kegan (Danielle Writz) Back of Stoughton, WI; Kaitlyn Back of Salt Lake City, UT, Michael (Kristen) Piel of Eau Claire, WI, Joseph Galetka of Neillsville, Amy Galetka of GA, Holly (Ryan) Schneiderwent of Plover, WI, Benjamin Galetka of Stevens Point, WI; goddaughter, Candace Knuth of Fairchild, WI; three grandchildren, Morgan Galetka, Lily Schneiderwent, Gabriel Galetka; siblings, Paul (Helen) Back Jim (Nancy) Back, Leonard Back, Imogene (Joe) Ida and his ex-wife, Mary Olson-Back. He is preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Myra.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
