David Hohenstein

July 28, 1958 — September 23, 2023

David Dean Hohenstein, age 65, of Marshfield, WI, formerly of Neillsville, WI, died Saturday, September 23, 2023, at his home.

Dave was born on July 28, 1958, to Darrel and Joyce (Kuehn) Hohenstein. He graduated from Neillsville High School in 1977, and then married Carole Humphrey, the love of his life, on May 5, 1979. They raised two sons, Nathan and James. Dave was the best Dad, Grandpa and Husband ever. He was so proud of his kids, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. He would do anything for them, always helping out with home projects anyway he could. Dave worked 20 years at Nelson Muffler, 8 years at Sunburst Youth Homes in maintenance, 8 years at Family Health Care Center as the Building Grounds Director, 8 years at the Neillsville School District as the Maintenance Supervisor, and 6 months at Jackson County as the Maintenance Supervisor. Dave and Carole moved to Marshfield to be closer to kids and grandkids, then he finished up his career in maintenance at the Marshfield Clinic. He retired three years ago.

Dave was a hard worker. He grew up on his parent's family farm. He built one new home, and was always remodeling others, including their current home. He was very proud and picky of the work he did on any project he ever did.

Besides working hard, Dave also played hard. He loved his motorcycle which he rebuilt from the ground up. Loved to do wood-working projects - he made a roll-top desk and dressers, cabinets, and many other things. There wasn't anything he couldn't do, from electrical, plumbing, dry wall and construction. He will be missed by many.

Dave and Carole took many trips with the kids when they were growing up. They went to South Dakota, Wyoming, Texas, New Mexico, Michigan, many trips to the renaissance festival in Minnesota, along with numerous camping trips. After the kids were older, Dave and Carole traveled to Branson, MO, twice, Albuquerque, Tulsa, Seattle, Cozumel, Cancun, Puerto Rico, Punta Cana, Jamaica twice and the 100th anniversary of Harley-Davidson in Milwaukee.

Along with traveling, Dave enjoyed motorcycling with friends, volleyball and concerts. After they became grandparents, life took a different turn. Dave was so excited to hang out with Trent, Parker, Emily and Jack every chance he got. He was happy to pull them on sleds behind the 4-wheeler, play chess, do puzzles, and he was always happy to teach them how to use different tools in his shop. They were definitely the light of his life.

Dave is survived by his wife, Carole, two sons, Nathan (Becky) Hohenstein of Marshfield, WI, and James (Katie) Hohenstein of Wausau, WI, four grandchildren, Trent, Parker, Emily and Jack, his father, Darrel Hohenstein of Neillsville, WI, four siblings, Gene (Irene) Hohenstein of Neillsville, WI, Cheryl (Walter) Karl of Neillsville, WI, Dale (Bonnie) Hohenstein of Granton, WI, and Terry (Tammy) Hohenstein of Gardnerville, NV, and a sister-in-law, Marsha Hohenstein of Claremore, OK.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Hohenstein, his mother-in-law, Mildred Humphrey, his father-in-law, Jerry Humphrey Sr., a brother, Gary Hohenstein, sisters-in-law, Judy (Tom) Humphrey, Judy (Arnie) Humphrey and LouAnn Humphrey, a brother-in-law, Tom Humphrey, and nephews, Ross Hohenstein, Randy Humphrey, Jordan Humphrey and Dallas Humphrey.

A memorial service for Dave will be held at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at the American Legion in Neillsville. Pastor Terry Marg will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 4th at the American Legion.
